An Enchanting Place To Learn
To step into the Learning Tree is to step into an enchanted wonderland for children. Walls are painted a soothing blue and decorated with children's masterpieces. Primary colored new chairs and other new equipment, a welcome staff, and smiling little faces greeting me.
Guiding me on my tour is owner Abe Shampaner, better known as "Mr. Abe", as he is affectionately called by his students.
They seek him out as we talk and he gives each one a word of encouragement and a smile. He says they keep him young.
Many things make this facility unique such as the extended hours for its two universal pre-kindergarten classes, a kindergarten class where many of its graduates join the Beacon Program set up by the Board of Education and even computers to introduce students to the high tech world they are just beginning their education in.
Abe Shampaner believes in two primary goals for every child:
Learning the developments of social skills with the basics of following rules, sharing, and playing with others.
Secondly, to give each child a sound education curriculum where the basics are taught in an age appropriate manner. There is a nursery, an afterschool program and a summer camp program.
The staff provides arts and crafts instructions, snacks, and a well equipped gymnasium in the afterschool program. The kids are required to do their homework, and the staff personally checks it before they go home. The facility provides two outdoor above ground swimming pools with licensed instructors and cultural field trips off campus.
The Learning Tree is located in a beautiful neighborhood and has a large playground equipped yard and an air conditioned building.
They service the community with an annual carnival to benefit the American Cancer Society This years will be on Friday, August 18th from noon until 3 p.m., and the whole neighborhood is invited. They also sponsor a little league team and a hockey team.
They are currently teaching second generation children as they have been in business for 28 years.
Located just off Eliot Avenue on Lutheran Avenue in Middle Village, they are open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
Come and meet Mr. Abe, his warm staff, and the adorable, charming children and discover what the wonder is all about For further information, call 899-2020.
